Flow in Sports: The Keys to Optimal Experiences and Performances

The experience of flow is still one of the least understood phenomena in sport. And yet it is one of the richest, most memorable experiences an athlete will ever know. Now, in the first book devoted exclusively to flow in sports, the pioneering legend Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi and sport psychology researcher Sue Jackson attempt not only to explain the phenomenon but also to identify the key conditions associated with its occurrence.

Sue Jackson, PhD, has been conducting research on flow in sport and related settings since graduate studies led her to this fascinating area in the late 80's. Her work has focused on understanding the flow experience through a combination of qualitative and quantitative research approaches. She brings to this work various perspectives, including athlete, coach, sport psychology consultant, university academic, and more recently, yoga practitioner. Jackson lives in Queensland, Australia, and is continuing to research and write about the flow experience across a variety of settings.

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, PhD, developed the concept of flow in the mid-1970s and has pioneered research on the subject in work, social, and educational settings ever since. He has published 10 books, among them the ground-breaking Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, and more recently, Finding Flow: The Psychology of Engagement With Everyday Life. Csikszentmihalyi is Professor of Management at Claremont Graduate University in California.
