YOGA provides an opportunity to release, relax, and re-energise. Through physical postures, breathing, and meditation exercises, the body and mind are brought into stillness. Through stillness, we can gain awareness – awareness of our body, mind, and spirit. Awareness of what it is we want and where it is we are going. In other words, yoga is a path to optimal experience.
Vyn Bailey, who came to yoga late in life, after being trained as a Catholic priest, translated the Yoga Sutras of Indian philosopher and teacher, Patanjali, at age 83. One of Patanjali's sutras, or sayings, has been translated by Bailey as, "Yoga is stilling of movement in the mind". Bailey continues:
The body, mind, and spirit at one in stillness – that is yoga. The stillness is not a trance, but is accompanied by full awareness. The animal in the wild, surprised by danger, freezes in its tracks. Never has it been so still, so alert. Complete stillness coupled by full awareness – that is yoga. (Bailey, Patanjali's Meditation Yoga, 1997, p. 20).
According to Csikszentmihalyi (Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, 1990), yoga relates in several ways to flow, and provides a useful model for anyone wanting to be in better control of their energy. Csikszentmihalyi wrote in Flow (1990, p. 106) that yoga can be regarded as "one of the oldest and most systematic methods of producing the flow experience." TESTIMONIALS
Sue brings a background in human movement to the class, which ensures that she combines the postures in a way that gradually builds strength and flexibility, without overstraining you. The fact that classes are conducted in a small studio also creates a warm atmosphere, which contributes to the feelings of calm and grounded-ness that I get from her yoga classes.

The postures and your instructions have taught us to isolate our core muscles, which we believe has contributed to increasing our strength - hence our ability to plank!!! This will stand us in good stead as we trek in the Himalayas. You have also challenged us to reflect on our ability to relax and clear our minds.
- Vicki, former high school deputy principal
and world adventurer
I really enjoyed the yoga. Having never done it before, I was a bit skeptical that I would be able to do it, being such a 'go-go' person, but I have really loved it. The term has made a huge difference to our preparation for the Himalayas, so thank you.
- Simone, GP & world adventurer

- Yanina, stay-at-home mom
Just also wanted to say how much I appreciate your classes - my overall flexibility and core strength is improving all the time and I love the friendly banter amongst all the class participants. I think I will be doing yoga for the rest of my life now as a result!
